As you will be able to see,I have many interests.I'm 26 yrs.old and I am attending the University of Utah,to obtain my B.S. in Nursing.I enjoy helping others.I am currently volunteering for my community as a hospice care giver and I provide respite care for medically fragile children in their homes.I am a health educator speaking at correctional facilities, schools and treatment programs.I act as a young parent advocate teaching parenting skills & prenatal education.I have also voulenteered the Arthritis Foundation,AJAO,American Cancer Society,Western Rehabilitation Institute and the Utah Arts Festival.
I don't really have time like I used to but over the years,I have been very active in theatre and appeared in over 15 productions. I have film and television experience,I'v done print and runway modeling.I was accepted & attended two intensive schools of the performing arts and have been trained in other areas such as dance and vocal performance. I have been invited to join acting companys and to participate in special projects.I've won many scholastic honors and awards for my other accomplishments.
These activities helped me win the title of Miss Utah Achievement. It really feels wonderful to have been crowned for my accomplishments, not my looks! The pageant (a scholarship & recognition program) judges applicants on community service, academic achievements/awards,leadership,talents,special training & personal obstacles overcome. As you can see it's not a beauty pageant,it's a brain pageant. That's why I'm so proud of having the title for the next year.
So far my year as "Miss Utah" has been wonderful! I have had a chance to make many public appearances in my community.I have been given great opportunity's to attend, participate and speak at different events and fundraisers. This year I will be working with the Arthritis Foundation,Sandy City Fire Department,Muscular Dystrophy Assocition,Ouelessebougou-Utah Alliance,Families For African American Awareness and the Utah AIDS Foundation on a regular basis.I am really looking forward to what's to come! Check back often,I will be writing about some of the experiences I have already had. Hopefully....I will soon put up some pictures so you can see what I've been up to as well.
I did a project for "USA Weekend's" National "Make A Difference Day" I collected food for the "Utah Food Bank".I wanted to help the many families that go to and count on the food bank. This christmas season I worked on two holiday gift programs. One was for the Utah AIDS Foudation and other was for Families For African American Awareness.I worked to get local groups to take some of my "Red Ribbion Families" for the AIDS Foudation,I was in charge of wrapping and delivering the gifts. For FFAAA we collected gifts for inner city and homeless families. At the end of last year I was able to corner my local Mayor at the "Healthy Sandy Summit" and talk to him about starting a new program in my city, modeled after a program that Gen. Colin Powell started. He was intrested,i'll keep you posted!
On Martin L.King Day I worked with the NAACP on the 16th annual Martin Luther King JR. Memorial Luncheon and A Jubilee Of Song in a local mall's atrium. I was the MC for the Jubilee Of Song.We had singers and I spoke about why Martin L. King is important. I'm working very hard on two auction commitees, they will both take place in march. It's been alot of work trying to get everything done! I appeared and spent three days vounteering for the 1999 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships.
February is Black History Month and I was part of Families For African American Awareness's Black History Fair held at the BYU campus. It was an all day event and went really well. I was appointed to be Fundrasing Chapter Chair for the Utah NAMES Project, which works towards exhibiting the AIDS Memorial Quilt and rasing AIDS awareness. We will be displaying the quilt at the state capital on march 19th. I'm also working to prepare for Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Week...also in march. March is going to be a long month.
I will be working on additional pages to my web site about pageants, interracial issues, arthritis and more... so keep watching!
